SC F1 CHAPTER 3

3.1 Matter Has Mass and Occupies Space
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. This means that living things such as human beings, plants, animals and also non-living things such as cars, house, cooking oil are all matter.

3.2 The Three States of Matter
Matter is made up of very small discrete particles. These particles consist of atoms and molecules. Atoms are the smallest particles. All substances are made up of the smallest particles i.e. atoms. Molecules are made up of two or more atoms combined together.
Matter exists in either a solid, liquid or gaseous state

***John Dalton, an English school teacher, was the first to propose a theory regarding the composition of matter. He stated that matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. He said that these particles are the indivisible parts of a specific kind of matter.***

Density of cube= (length x breath x height) ÷mass
Example: (2cm x 2cm x 2cm) ÷ 4g = 2 g/cm2
Density of rod= (πr2 x length) ÷mass             π=22/7
Example: 22/7 x 7 x 7 x 14 ÷ 2g = 1078 g/cm2
